From a trustworthy source the Rome correspondent of the “Telegraph” learns that the Pope has expressed his intention to open negotiations—of course, unofficially—with tho Italian Government relative to the basis of a possible modus vivendi between Church and State, with a view to putting an end to the fruitless conflict .which has existed between them for over 30 years. His Holiness has been induced to take this course partly hy his personal convictions, but to some extent also by reasons connected with his health. He is anxious to be in a position enabling him to leave tho Vatican, as he has always been accustomed to an open-air life. Before taking this step, which would appear to all tho Catholio world as a concession to the Kingdom of Italy, tho Pope desires to ascertain tho possibility of obtaining some concession of benefit to tho Papacy which would render his action justifiable.
