Tho man who owns tho “Encyclopaedia Britannica,’’ and considers it simply a work of reference to be appealed to in case of doubt, or wheii in quest of' specific information, doubtless feels that he has his money’s worth even if he paid the publishers’ catalogue price, .£45, for the work in half morocco binding. It is worth that expenditure to know that he has always at hand the most authoritative information in all departments of human knowledge, yet if he limits his use of the volumes to reference alone, ho is missing by for the greater portion of its value to him. It is a reading library, os well as a reference library. Upon its pages the greatest minds of the human race have spread their thoughts in the choicest language. Gems of literature are these monographs on all topics that interest mankind, written by such men as Right ' on James Bryce, Professor Max Muller, Sir AValter Besant, Dean Farrar, and the eleven hundred other illustrious names that make up the “Society of Gentlemen” who produced this great work.
