FINANCE AND TRADE.

Tho “Star” states .that six weeks ago a settler in the back-blocks—full}- thirty miles from Mastcrtou—brought a line of sheep to market. The bidding was not too brisk, and ho was offered As 6d nor head for them. This ho refused, and ho took the sheep home. 'Lately he brought the same sheep fo market, was offered only 5s per head, and let them go. He now understands the rudiments of “profit and loss.” STOCK SALE. Messrs Lowes and lorns report that at their Mastcrtou stock sale on Wednesday there was a good yarding in sheep and cattle, fully 5000 of the former and 200 of tho latter coming forward. A few lots of fat ewes were sold, but no fat wethers offered. Wo had a big entry in wethers; in fact, too many for tho public, with the result that buyers held oil, and made terms afterwards, privately. Very forward, empty ewes sold .well, but tlie poor classes wore hard to quit. Ewes in Jamb were only medium and poor classes, rates riding low. Some pens of good lambs sold readily inferior sorts at reduced - prices. In beef, wc penned some fine lots in steers and heifors.which were well competed for, rough sorts being passed. Good young cattle made sound rates, but old cows and weak calves tailed to sell. \u- quote:—Eat ewes, 10s 6cl to 11s 4cl; forward ewes, 7s to 9s; best wethers, 12s; others, 10s 6d to 11s Gd; ewes in lamb, 7s 6d to 9s; best wethers, 12s; others, 10s 6d to 11s 6cl; ewes in lamb, 7s 6d to 9s; culls, 5s t° 6s; best lambs, 7s 6d to 8s Gd; others, 5s to 7s; prime beef steers, £7 13s; heifers, £5 IGs 6d; cows, 80s to 100 s; young steers, 555; heifers, 50s to 70s; yearlings, 42s ; calves,' 30s and 20s; dairy cows, £4 to £7.
