INCREASE GRANTED BY! AC'S,' TRALIAN OWNERS. } MELBOURNE, May 24/ N At a conference of shipowners attdj delegates from the Seamen’s Union, ity was agreed to raiso the wages of sea-q men, firemen and trimmers to £7, ii\ month from Ist July. _ It was also practically agreed t<l adopt what is known, as the “Noise ZaH* laud, slip." At present the wages paid per month,-; by Australian companies are i —-Seamen,' £Gj trimmers, £6; lamp-trimmers, £6fci firemen, £8; greasers, £Bj donkey-T men, £U. The Union Company and the, Huddart, Parker Company, trading to' New Zealand, pay 10s per month irwj . crease on these rates. It will, thereof, fore,( be seen that the Australian. owjj ners have agreed to give seamen an advance of £l per month, but there is ! some discrepancy in the message in reJ gard to,the wages of firemen, and trim-j mers. A' monthly wage of £7 woUldf not be an “advance” to them, as they already receive £B. The “Now Zealand slip” referred to. in the message may, possibly mean the award of the Arb * tration Court. '
