VICTORIA DAY.

A close holiday was kept in the city yes terday, just as was wont to ba the caso when tils 24 th May was known as “the (Quota’s Birthday." Under the name of "Victoria Day/' the anniversary so long celebrated was generally observed. There were very few fixtures to attract spectators. The cold and unsettled weather was not favourable to excursions. A rain squall in the morning foa-inod an unpleasant experience tor cyclists, pedestrians and picnickers. In the evening there were large audiences at the various places of amusement. PIIES3 ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, May 21. Victoria Day was observed as a general holiday, all the oanhs and offices, as well as most qf the business places, being closed. The ■ iticiPdi attraction was the races at Takapuna. Harbour excursions were well patronised. A bowling tournament also took place. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, May 24. Hough weather has been experienced here to-day, alternate rain, hail and wind upsetting all arrangements for celebrating Victoria Day. The friendly societies organised a fete and sports fojr the day, but they had to be abandoned on account of the elements. Several trade displays and friendly societies' tableaux had been prepared, and they paraded in the morning, s'so tho committee decided to judge the tableaux, and awarded first prize to tho Foresters’ display, the Druids being second. The hockey and football tourneys will probably take place some Wednesday afternoon. Scratch matches in hockey and football were arranged this afternoon tc avoid disappointing the visiting teams from Wanganui and Wood ville.
