PRESS ASSOCIATION. PALMEKSTOX. May 24. A convention of two hundred delegates, representing mo temperance societies, of the cuurchos of Wellington, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki, met hero to-day. Two public meetings were helu in the theatre, where speeches were delivered by the Revs if. W. Lsitt, U. Hammond, it. Haddou, Trcstrail, \V. Wills, VV. Dawson, J. Cocker, Dr i\'cwmau, Messrs A. it, Atkinson and E. Pirani, .u.li.lt.’a. The Convention passed resolutions In Memorial)! of Victoria, of allegiance to Edward VII., and of welcome t° the Duke and Duchees of Cornwall. It also expressed its appreciation of tne services rendered to temperance by Lords itoberts, Wolscicy and Kitchener. The proposed Licensing Bill was considered, ami all tho alterations condemned. Electorate rights were approved, and resolutions wore passed concerning the evasion of duty by tbe police ana the inadequate penalties for drunkenness. Greetings were exchanged with the Kadapoi, Ashburton, Auckland and Brisbane Conventions. The meetings will be continued to-morrow. AUCKLAND, May 24. Two houses at Newmarket owned by Mr E. Heron, and occupied by Mr Edwards, saddler, and Mr j. Beaver, chaffcutter, with their contents, have been destroyed by fire. A cottage, owned by Mr Heron, and. occupied ,by Mr Oiut, was also gutted. The brigade prevented. the spread of the fire. Mr Cliffs furniture was insured in the Koval Office for £SO. Th e other insurances are unknown.
