ASSESSMENT COURT.

A sitting of the Assessment Court was held yesterday. Dr McArthur, S.M., presiding. , ~ Mr James Ames (City Valuer) appeared in support of his assessments, and Mr Martin watched the proceedings on behalf of the City Council. COOK WARD. F. G. Bolton objected to an increase of £5 on the previous year’s valuation made on his property in Coromandel street. Mr Ames called W. M. Muir, who estimated the value of the proper, ty at £6OO. Mr Bolton submitted that the land tax value of the property was only £4OO. The valuation was sustained. Mother Mary Joseph Aubert applied, through Mr Devine, to have remittee; the tax levied upon two bouses belonging to an undenominational Home for Incurables, situated in Buckle street. Portions of the building bad been let to tenants until lately, and therefore it had been necessary to make charges upon it. The last of these tenants ceased occupancy that day. The exemption was granted, the Council making no objection. TE ARO WARD. Air Ames asked that two brick buildings belonging to M. Kennedy be reduced to £2OO each. A mistake bad been made in valuing them.—Reduced accordingly. W. C. Watson objected to a valuation of £25 put on a property in Aro street. Mr Ames said he conceded that the house on the section was a poor one, but he looked upon the property as too valuable a one to have so inferior a building upon it. Eventually Mr Ames consented to a reduction to £2O per annum. An objection by the same' owner in regard to a .section in Edinburgh terrace was over-ridden, and the valuation sustained.

G. M. Hewson objected to an assessment of bis cottage in Finlay terrace at lis per week. The amount was upheld. E. Monaghan's bouse in Holland street was reduced from an £lB charge to £l6 per annum. Elizabeth Ann Mason had the assessment on her property in Millward street reduced +o £2B per annum from £3O. A property belonging to 11. M. Simpson, situated in Palm Grove, the house on which had been destroyed by lire since the valuation was made, was reduced from £2B to £lO.

J. A. Butts objected to the assess, ment of her property in Rintoul street at £I6OO. The house was old, but the property valuable. Dr McArthur sustained the valuer’s assessment. LAMBXON WARD.

Zohrab (by Mr Bolton) objected to an assessment of £226 on his Panama street property. The rentals derived were £250 per year, and the regular deduction from that left £220.,. He would ask that the valuation of last year be sustained. Mr Ames said there had' been improvements made to the proper, ty, but he had found out since that those had been made by tenants. No increased rental was derived by the owner. The assessment was reduced to that previously obtaining. Thomas R. Jones objected to the value placed: on his property in Victoria street. After expert evidence had been called as to value, the assessment was reduced from to £lio. In the matter of a _ contiguous property (the Trocadero buildings) the value was as. sessed at £330 per year, as against £350, previous valuation. W. C. Fitz Gerald objected to!a olaim of £650 on part of his property on Lambton quay. Appellant estimated the rating value of the premises at £468. Each side called expert evidence. —Reduced to £550. , 1 P. Hayman’s property in Victoria street was granted a reduction . from £SOO to £475. THORNDON W.HID. Elizabeth! C. Harris (by Mr Luckie) objected to a valuation'of £65 on her Halswell street property. A £5 reduction was granted.
