At the meeting of ...the City Council last night there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. G. \\\ Aitken), Councillors Anderson, Murdoch, Willestou, Izard, Evans, Tolhurst, Winder, Luke, McGill, Smith, Barbel - and Townsend. /The following reconime’ndations of the Works Committee were adopted: That the resolution of the Council passed Jon the 28th February' last, in reference to Mr Fitchett’s house at Cairo roaid, be adhered to; that the sewer at No: 7 ejector, Victoria street, bo opened up, and such repairs be effected as are found to bo necessary; that tho ap-‘ plication of Mrs Janisch for leave to build a cottage in. wood at Town Acre 489, Wellington terrace, bo not agreed to; that the application of Mr George Bradley for compensation on account of an.alleged accident in Adelaide road bo not entertained; that consideration of the proposal for the erection of a retaining wall at'Hall street, in order to widen the footpath there, be, deferred for the present; that the application of Mr. P- McArdle for leave to send refuse from the Queen’s Wharf to the Destructor be declined.

The Baths Committee reported that twenty applications were received for the post of clerk of works at the Te Arp Baths and Clyde quay widening contract. After considering, thorn all tho committee recommended that Mr Jolm G. of Victoria place, Wellington, be appointed^ —The report was. adopted. ; Tho Tenders Colmmittee' reported that it had accepted the following tenders for supplies for the year commencing on- the Ist April:—General supplies, waterworks, and timber, Stewart and Co. ; brass , and zinc . work, Banks and Son; toon foundry work, Bobortson and Co.; .coal, Blackball Company and R. Duignan; forage, "S. Tlowe and Sous;. - cement (English). J. Duthie and Co.,' Limited; sand. G. H. Baylis and Co.; gravel, J. J. I£. Powell; firewood, W. J‘. Gaudin; .and drain pipes, P. Hutson and Co.-—The report was adopted. It was reported that the engineer was making inquiries as to whether or not the Council should da its own horseshoeing. , ... , The Fire Brigade Committee' made the following recommendations; —That thirty caps bo provided for the members of the Fire Police in accordance with ,tho pattern submitted, the oost being 5s 6d per cap. That the Council provide afternoon tea for visitors on the occasion of the opening of the new central station on the 17l:h lApril, and contribute £2O towards the expenses of the social to be held by the members of the brigade and the (Fire Police in the evening. That an attempt be made to obtain an amendment of the Juries Act next session of Parliament, so as to exempt members of the Fire Police from serving on juries.—The report was adopted. . Tenders for printing andf stationery were referred to a committee 1 , which was given power to accept. A letter from the Town Clerk of Melrose with reference to. the obi lection and disposal of refuse from Mitohelltown and Taitvillo was referred to the engineer for report. The Mayor said that the Mayor of Melrose had waited upon him in regard to the matter. It was found that arrangements had been made some time ago that the! refuse in question should be burned in, the destructor for £5 per annum. Thej question was' raised by the .
