SWIMMING.
A largo number of spectators assembled at the Thorndoii Baths last evening to witness (ho first distance (50yds> for the “Tom Gray” Challenge Cup, a.t present held by J. M. Hamilton, of Greymouth. The competitors were despatched to a splendid start by Mr A. W. Smith. After going twenty yards, C. P. Blacklock .was m the lead, but a. final spurt on tho part of G. A. Wilkes and F. Roberts resulted in a win for _tho latter, in the very fasti time of 29 4-osee. Mr J. T. Gray, who acted as judge, had great difficulty in placing the second and third men. The next distance (100yds) will bo decided next Thursday. Tho Wellington Amateur Swimming Club has completed all arrangements for the Anniversary Day sports at the Queen’s AVharf. Spectators will be comfortably seated. The City Brass Band has been engaged for the afternoon. The events include, tho Wellington championship, the Sixth Contingent Race, Ladies’ Bracelet, Anniversay Handicap, Alaideu Race, exhibition of high diving, tub race and walking the slippery boom.
