CONFERENCE AT SAMOA.
‘ RIVAL CHIEFS FRIENDLY. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The latest news from Samoa, to hand to-day by the Alameda, shows that up to the 28th June 3000 rifles had been surrendered by the natives, not including those served out to Malietoa’s party by the warships. A conference between the Maiaafa chiefs and the Malietoa chiefs took place on the American warship Badger, when the rival parties shook hands in the presence of the Commissioners. Peace is restored finally as a result of this meeting, which was arranged by Malietoa Tanu and Mataafa at the *uggostion of the Commissioners. The rival factions have returned to their villages in a friendly manner, and are awaiting further action by the throe Powers. The seat of Government at Apia has been vacated' by both the native parties by order of the Commissioners, who are now going round the various islands of the group, explaining matters and acting as peacemakers between the rival parties. The German Consul (Herr Rose) has left Samoa, and Dr'Self. the Municipal President, is occupying that office temporarily. Mr Hamilton Hunter, a Commissioner from Fiji, is temporarily acting as British Consul in the absence of Mr Maxse (who left on the 16th of Juno oh leave) and until the arrival of Major Mair from Auckland. SYDNEY, Tuesday. It is,, understood that the high chief Malietoa Tanu of Samoa intends to visit Sydney shortly for the purpose of completing his education.
