The Wakatu was unable to work btoney hurst this trip, owing to unfavourable weather. - , , The Aorere left for Patea at noon yester day, but owing to the heavy sea in the Strait returned to port at 4 p.in. The thickness of the weather in the Strait last night led to the Ileskoth’s engines bo ing slowed down after passing the Broth ers. The Omapere experienced similar weather. . . Captain Shaw, who was laid up in Auck land through a severe attack of sciatica, has resumed command of the Mawhera, which arrived from tho North yesterdayafternoon. A heavy easterly swell greatly retarded the steamer’s operations in the different bays along the East Coast, which accounts for her having been so long out from Auckland. The Te Anau had 172 tons of cargo for Wellington, 78 tons for Lyttelton, and 12.. tons for Dunedin. Fine weather was experienced on tho run down from Auckland The Wairoa, Kahu and Opawa arc ro ceiving an overhaul on the Patent Slip. Tho Mawhera will load at Westport for Napior and Gisborne, calling in at Wellington on her way North. The Dingadee will load at Westport today for Wellington. Owing to the large amount of cargo to be handled at Lyttelton, tho Monowai will not leave that port for Wellingon until Friday night. Her departure for Sydney has been postponed until Saturday. As the Corinna has been detained down South she will not reach Wellington until to-morrow, continuing on to Westport the same afternoon. The Brunner, which will leave this evening for Westport, will call at Picton to land a number of railway trucks for tho Railway Department. The Queen of the South, which left for Foxton last evening, returned after getting as far as the Heads, tho weather being too dirty in the Strait for safe navigation. On account of tho southerly gale and wet weather tho departure of tlic Stormbird and, Hesketh has been postponed until to-day.

.A SMART TRIP. Tho barque Bessfield, from Glasgow, arrived in the stream, after a splendid run of .53 hours from. Port Chalmers, strong iPitherly winds being experienced. As soon as her sails were-furled the tug Dnco took charge, and she was berthed at the Queen’s Wharf at .about "4 p.m. under •the supervision of Pilot Shilling. She has •148 tons of original cargo to put out in Wellington. -Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co. are the local agents. ARATAPU. FROM-TAIRUA. The brigantine Aratapu, timber-laden, from Tairua, arrived off Wellington Heads at 8 a.m. yesterday, and was berthed for discharge at the Wool- Wharf at noon. Captain Gilmer reports that the Aratapu experienced heavy weather since leaving Tairua yesterday week’, .the little vessel being practically under \vaf:er throughout the passage. A very heavy northeasterly gale jarnbed tho brigantine in the Bay of Plenty; thence westerly gales to Cape Palliser, when a southerly breeze assisted the vessel into port. The Aratapu has 100,000 feet of timber, of which 80,000 feet is consigned to Messrs Waddell, McLeod and Weir, and the remainder to Mr John Beck. On discharge she proceeds back to Tairua to load, most pro : hably, again for Wellington. TAIERI IN BAD WEATHER. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Tuesday.
