LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Lower Hntt Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr Poster) presided, and all the councillors were present except Councillor .Jones. A deputation consisting of Messrs Waugh and Gibbons waited on the Council and asked that the footway from Black Bridge to the borough boundary might he repaired. It was decided to put the work in hand at once.

A letter was read from Mr Mothes, of Petone, asking for the Council’s cooperation in the agitation for the straightening and duplication of the railway line between Petone and Wellington, in regard to which a committee had been set up in Petone. It was decided to co-operate with the Petone committee. Messrs Haybittle, Alexander and Jenness waited on the Council in regard to the same question, and railway matters generally. The Mayor informed the deputation of the decision the Council hail just come to. After discussion it was decided to call a public meeting for the discussion of the matter, on a date to be arranged by the Mayor and Mr Haybittle. The. health officer reported that a case of typhoid fever had occurred at Alicetown, and that ho had been unable to discover any local cause for the disease. Councillor Jones forwarded his resignation from the Council, and stated in his letter that his medical adviser had ordered him to leave the colony for a time. The resignation was accepted with regret, anil sympathy was expressed with Mr Jones in his illhealth. The Mayor made a report of an interview with the Petone Borough Council on sanitary matters, and urged that there should bo no delay in dealing with the question. The report of the inspector of slaugh-ter-houses was of a satisfactory character. The balance-shoot was adopted, and ordered to be printed. It was decided to strike a general rate of id and a. rate of l-5d for hospital and' charitable aid. The Finance Committee reported ".a: the receipts for the month iniiriu,;' al to £125 10s lOd (mostly publicans' nconsesl. and that the overdraft stood at £t)Sl 4s Bd.
