NEW FRENCH WAR MINISTER.
•IMPORTANT INTERVIEW. GENERAL GALLIFET’S MISSION. (Received June 27, 12.20 a.m.) PARIS, Monday. The Minister for War in the new French Ministry, in the course of an interview, made several important declarations. General Gallifet stated that his mission was to defend the army, whilst keeping it strictly within its functions. It was unnecessary for army officers to engage in press polemics, but they might repel an insult with the sword. Generals Harlsehmidt and Roget and two colonels, for offending against discipline, had been transferred to the provinces. Genera! Gallifet repudiated any intention to disturb Generals Zurlinden, Boisdeffre, Gonsc and Pellieus. Personally, ho advocated a. policy of oblivion in regard to the part played by these officers in the Dreyfus affair. The Minister added that he was convinced of Colonel Picquart’s innocence. No influence would be permitted to interfere with the Rennes court-martial; its finding would be loyally enforced.
