CHESS TOURNEY.

' CLELAND WINS THE FINAL. PitESS ASSOCIATION. Dunedin, December 29. At the Chess Congress L A Ololand and J. Monat met in the fourth round. Monat adopted the French defence, and Cleland mated on the 31st move. This win mates Cleland the champion of New Zealand for 1899.

At the annual meeting of the Congress a motion was carried expressing deep regret at the death of Mr Henry Hookham. Mr Justice Denniston was elected president. Vice 1 - presidents, Messrs -W. R ’ Cooke (Christchurch), T), Stonhousp and Cleland (Dunedin), the Hon F. Arkwright and 0. W. Benbow (Wellington), J. Mohennau and A. Millar (Auckland). Hon; secretary, Mr F. K. Rolling (Wellington). It was resolved to hold the next Congress at Wellington on a date to bo decided by the Connoil.
