Press Association. NARROW ESCAPE PROM DROWNING. Gisbikne, May 30. A young man named "Thompson, son of the harbourmaster, was washed off the breakwater this morning. He had a narrow escape of drowning, being over half an hour in the water. He was picked up by a boat’s crew, which went to the rescue, in an exhausted condition. The boat, which had proceeded beyond the shelter of the breakwater, narrowly escaped swamping, PIBE AT MAR AJA. Hawera, May 30. The Manaia flourmill, owned by Mrs Milroy, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday morning. The building and plant were insured in the South British office for £9OO. A number of settlers who had grain stored in the mill were uninsured and are heavy losers. Messrs Hubbard and Tait had wheat stored of the value of £IOO, on which they had a policy of £3OO, but it is stated that they let it lapse a few days before the fire.

DR. STUART'S MEMORIAL. Dunedin, May 30. The statue to be erected to the late Rev Dr. Stuart arrived by the Matatua, and a start has been made with the erection of the pedestal. THE INROADS OP THE SEA AT DUNEDIN. Dunedin, May 30. At a meeting of the Ocean Beach Domain Board, it was decided to again impress upon the Government the necessity of at once taking action to protect the lives and property of residents on the flat from the danger of the sea breaking in. The Board declined any responsibility in this matter for either what had happened or might happen in future. In addition to claims made by property-owners for damages, the St. Hilda Council has sent a claim for £3O to the Government for damages by the recent inrush of the sea. A PHILANTHROPIC BEQUEST. Napier, May 30. By the will of the late Mr James Anderson the Children’s Home receives a legacy of £250.
