POLICE COMMISSION.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timabu, April 16. The Police Commission sat here to-day and completed its work in one day. The police officers made a few complaints about pay and promotion. Mounted-Constable Crawford, who had been 164 years in the force, said he was still in the second-class, though he had a clean conduct sheet and good record for meritorious service, and had been promised promotion years ago. Gaol-keeper Weathered complained that his promotion had been checked by an undeserved black mark given him in Hawke’s Bay years ago, and he demanded au investigation, He submitted a long list of suggestions for the improvement of the conditions of service. Ha spoke in favour of the pension scheme and the giving up of long service pay towards it if necessary, Mr Taylor investigated a charge against a constable at Fairlia of being unduly friendly with one of the publicans there, but the charge was not sustained. The Esv W. Gillies complained of the lax administration of the licensing law, and gave several instances in .support of his charge. It was stated that in the case of a raid on an illicit still a man rode ont ahead of the police and warned the parties, and he must have got the information from the police.
Constable Parker, formerly of Clutha, explained the failure of the first raid on sly-grpg sellers in respect to which it had been insinuated that he gave one warning. He said that three ex-publicans were returning from Dunedin raoes in the same train by which a dozen police officers went out, and at Balclntha they set the wires to work, and frustrated the raid.
Some evidence was given about the drunkenness of two officers in Timaru within a few years past. The Commissioners left for Christchurch in the evening.
Chhistchdbch, April 16. The Police Commissioners arrived here to-night. The sitting here is expected to last about a fortnight.
