WHY SOME CYCLES RUN EASY.

Some years ago the English makers of high grade cycles commenced to fit large chain wheels. These reduce the tension of lie >chaiu, thereby saving friction, which increases the speed of the machine wonderfully. This is most marked when riding against a stiff head wind or climbing hills. Chain wheels on the crank shaft should not be less than 20 teeth, 21 or 21 being better, with corresponding large chain sprockets to the rear wheels. For towns situated on hillsides, large chain wheels are a necessity, as the small chain wheels (owing to the greater tension of the chain with increased friction) soon destroys the pitch of the chain, thereby making the cycle hard to drive up the slightest rise. k Star ’cycles have been fitted ■ with large chain wheels for two years, and this is one reason why riders of “Stars” can climb bills and with little extra exertion ride against stiff head winds.

For season '9V large chain wheels will be universal; even the Americans admit that no maker will dare to put out his new cycle for :1597 unless the front chain wheel is over 20 teeth.

The craze for lightness made some of the Yankees sacrifice all good running qualities to that of making cycles to sell on the scale?, as small chain wheels reduced the weight of the machine by nearly lib. We have been asked to have our “ Stars * enamelled in bright colours. This w* refuse to do, as no high-grade machine needs highcolonred paints to detract the eye from the details of , the machine. Onr cycles will be enamelled beautifully polished plain black, so that the details of construction will stand prominently out. Star cycles, now manufactured by the Eadie Manufacturing Company, England, arc the highest grade machines, built up with all the best patents and specialities of specialists. Call and see our machines- We can tell you something about wheels which may be useful iu the selection of a cycle. Our experience in the cycle trade runs back nearly nine years.
