THE CLAW FOR TWENTY COFFINS.
With reference to the disputed account for coffins supplied at tho time of the Brunner mine explosion and to the action raised by Mr Heron, the Greymouth undertaker,against the Greymouth * Point Elizabeth Hallway and Coal Company, in which he was nonsuited, the Government have now accepted the proposal made by tho managing director of the Company at the time, namely, that as the Company had already paid for the funeral expenses in connection with the disaster by theii quarterly payments to the “ Coalminers’ Belief, Sick and Accident Fund,” as provided for in the regulations for the administration of this fund established bv Hocdioa G 9 of tho Opal Mines Act, 1891, t.'ioy wore not entitled to pay these expenses the second time • but as the am rt,, nt fhe credit of this fond at the time of the disaster —viz., .£l3o9—bad been distributed by the trustees amongst tho bereaved, without reference to the legal claims upon it for funeral expenses, the Company would in the meantime be willing to advance the amounts required, on condition that they would be allowed to deduct those amounts from luture contributions by the Company to this fund. The Company have now issued cheques in payment of the ooffia accounts in accordance with the above arrangements.
