THE FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ GATHERING.

The Hutt and Pitone Friendly Societies held their third annual gathering at McNab’s, Lower Hutt, on Monday. The weather was delightful, and the affair passed off very successfully. There were between 800 and 009 people present. The representatives of the Fit no Lodges assembled at the Oddfellows’ Hall at 10 a.m., beaded by the Pitone Brass Band, under Bandmaster P. Linn, marched to the Hutt, where they were joined by. the representatives of the Hutt Lodges, and the procession then proceeded to the ground. Bro. B. J. Chatwin acted as marshal, and Bro. C. W. Brown as deputy-marshal. A good programme of sports was gone through, the principal event, the Friendly Societies’ Handicap, being woil by C. Arnold. Following are the results : .

Two Hundred and Twenty Yards Boys’ Race, under 16 (prizes presented by Messrs' Trueman and McCormack) —D. McGill, 1 ; W. Bowden, 2. Seven started. Friendly Societies’ Handicap, of three events. First aggregate, first prize, L2 ; second, 20s ; third, 10s ; first prize for each event, 25s ; second, 15s ; third, 10s. First event 100yds —C. Arnold (9yds), 1 ; H. Arnold (2yds), 2 ; G. Reid (scratch), 3. Three others started. Time, llsec. Four Hundred and Forty Yards Juvenile Friendly Societies’ Handicap ; prizes, Mr Lindsay’s cup and 10s (the cup to be won two years in succession, or three years at intervals) and 7s 6d D. McGill (scratch), 1 ; T. Tindal (10yds), 2. Mile Walking Race, open (prizes L2 and LI.—A. Rush ton (scratch), 1; J. H. Annan (25yds), 2. Rushton, who walked in capital style, won easily by about 20 yards. L. Parrant (35yds) finished second, but was disqualified. Time, 7|rain. Friendly Societies’ Handicap (second event) 220yds. —C. Arnold (12yds), 1; 11. Arnold (3yds), 2 ; G. Reid (scratch), 3. Three others ran. Won by about two yards after a good race. Time, 25sec. One Hundred Yards Sack Race, prize presented by Mr Pringle and 10s, and prize presented by Mr Webley.—W. Woolland, 1 ; W. Bowden, 2. Four Hundred and Forty Yards Handicap (open) prize presented by Messrs Feist and Harrowby and LI, and Mr Raven’s prize and 10s—W. King (20yds), 1 ; H. Arnold (scratch), 2. A close finish. A tug-of-war for a prize of L 4 was Avon by a team representing the Loyal Pitone Lodge, 1.0.0. F., Avhich defeated a team from the Rose of the Valley Lodge, I. (Hutt). The Avinners Avere captained by Bro. Noble. Girls’ Race (prizes presented by Mrs Emeny and Mr Sykes)—Dora McKain, 1; Mary Clout, 2. Friendly Societies’ Handicap (third event) 440yds—0. Arnold (25yds), 1; H. Arnold (scratch), 2 ; G. Reid (3yds), 3. Won by a yard after a good race. Five started. Time, Imin Isec.

Mile Race (open) Prizes, L2, LI, and 10s.—J. H. Annan (10yds), 1 ; J. Woods (25yds), 2. Three others ran. Time, s|min, One Hundred Yards Old Men’s Race. Prizes .presented by Mr Pole and Mr Cargill.—J. Vincent, 1 ; W. Donnelly, 2. Four Hundred and Forty Yards Obstacle Race. Prize presented by Mr Atkinson and LI 10s, and prize presented by Mr Burt and 10s.— J. Reardon, 1 ; A. Orr, 2. A protest was entered against the winner on .the ground that he did not run the proper course. The matter will be considered at the meeting of the Committee.

One Hundred Yards Married Women’s Race. Prizes, box of tea, presented by Mr Powell, and bag of sugar presented by Mr Wilkie.—Heni Wereta, 1; Mrs McKenzie, 2. Committeemen’s Race (440yds). Prize presented by Mr Pinkerton.—J. Coulter, 1; T. Carter, 2. The “Treacle Race” event, which caused considerable merriment, was won by J. Hoppy ; and J. Carey, 2, Two Apple Dipping contests were won by 0. Smith and P. Hayes, and A. Bailey won “ The Pigeon in the Pot,” The sports were well managed, and Mr E. J. Chatwin, who officiated as superintendent of sports, Messrs .C. W. Brown and S. R. Johnson as judges, Mr J. Nuttane (starter), and Mr H, A. Raven (timekeeper), performed their several duties in a most satisfactory manner. The General Committee was as follows ; Messrs E. J. Chatwin (chairman), W. Bishop, J. Carter, E. Collett, J. Coulter, J. Cudby, J. Gainor, W. G william, J. Hebbend, W. Hill (treasurer), J. Leadbetter, Toxenham, W. Routley, G. Stratford, and G. Loudon.
