BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, April 11. The annual election of a chairman of the Auckland Board of Education was held today, when Mr Eichard Udy was unanimously elected. The retiring Chairman, Mr Upton, delivered an address, in which be said that the Board had not now in their employ a single teacher except those under notice to leave (four or five) who was not classified. The whole staff except the pupil teachers was classified. Of the 573, 261 had classified in E, while the number classified in D was 133. The fact was that the impulse givee to study by the University here, and the impulse given to the studies of the teachers by •the Board themselves, had given the teachers to understand that if they were to succeed they must go on and become qualified. Great reduction had been made in the Board's expenditure. The sum of £1415 had been saved by the introduction of a system of sending ladies to the charge of country schools, and by pursuing it lurther another £ISOO would be gained. He suggested the establishment of a practising school for teachers, Napier, April 15. Mr Ormond was to-day re-elected chairman of the Education Board, a position he has held since the Board was called into existence. The building vote not being sufficient to extinguish the overdraft, even with a special grant of £IOOO, the Board decided to divert £6OO from the general fund, and to raise an overdraft of £9OO to provide sufficient funds to meet urgent requirements.
