HAVELOCK NEWS.
(FROIf OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.' Havelock, April 15. Mr Gifford and his daughter have been detained three days at Olliver’s accommodation house, i.e., from Friday, the 11th instant, until Monday, the 14tli. They had a sulky, but the Graham River (which, it is almost heedless to say, is not bridged), was so swollen, with the recent rains that it was not safe to cross with so slight a vehicle. They had previously to be carried over the Alfred Creek, that is, in the Rai Valley, on Friday, by the contractors at work there. There were trees across the road, and slips on the Rai saddle on Monday (yesterday). From the top of the Rai saddle to the summit of the Wangainoa, a distance of about 15 miles, appears to be not in the charge of any Road Board. Mr Olliver, who keeps an acsommodation house at Wangainoa, has repeatedly cleared the track, and has gob no payment. This is a strange state of affairs,' and surely ought not to be, especially on a main line of road.. The road at Totara Flat, Upper Pelorus Valley, was so flooded at 8 o’clock on Monday morning as to he not safe for horse traffic. This locality is also on the main read between Blenheim and Nelson, which is just seventyeight miles in extent, and there is not a bridge over any of the rivers. First a bridge is required over the Wairau river, which is a few miles on the N e l son side of Blenheim. Second, the road filled up at Totara Flat. Third, fourth and fifth, bridges over the Alfred, Brown, and Graham rivers, respectively. At the Mahakipawa diggings HOoz were got last week. The flood has interrupted work, but little damage has been done. At Wakamarina the gorge is all right after the flood. It will be pumped out and work proceeded with directly the river subsides.
