It is reported that the French banks have invested their reserves to a large extent in the recent Queensland loan, and it is believed that they intend to apply for a portion of the Victorian loan. THE PORTUGUESE EXPEDITION. A telegram from Delagoa Bay confirms the news of a Portuguese expedition, 1200 strong, being despatched to attack the Mpondo, Shire. COLONIAL MILITARY FORCES. At the Colonial Institute next month Colonel Owen, formerly Commandant of the Volunteer military force in South Australia, will read a paper on the military forces of Australia. GUBERNATORIAL. A report is current that Sir F. N. Broome, late Governor of Western Australia, will succeed Sir G. W. des Vceux as Governor of Hong Kong. THE LABOUR QUESTION. Berlin, April 15. A Bill reclassifying trades and providing for the disputes between employers and employe* being referred to arbitration will be introduced in the Reichstag. (Received April 17, 2 a.m.) SWAZILAND. Capetown, April 16. The press here denounces Lord Salisbury’s refusal to cede Swaziland to the Transvaal. MADAME MELBA. London, April 16. Madame Melba has been engaged to appear at Covent Garden Theatre in “ Hamlet,” “ Lohengrin,” and “ Esmeralda.” THE EGYPTIAN DEBT. Paris, April 16. It is considered likely that the French Government will propose the conversion of the entire Egyptian debt, thus saving a sum of L 300,000 annually. STRIKES. Vienna, April 13. Trade strikes are spreading throughout Austria. (Received April 16, 8.30 a.m.) SHIPPING AND COMMERCIAL. Sydney, April 16. Sailed —Handa Isle, for Kaipara. Hobart, April 16. The B.M.S. Tongariro arrived from London, via the Cape, at 3 this morning, and sailed again for New Zealand at 6 p.m. She brings 20 passengers for Australian ports, and 85 for New Zealand. Newcastle, April 16. Sailed—Circe, for Greymoutb. Brisbane, April 16. i Arrived — Jessie, from New Zealand. Melbourne, April 16. Bailed—Mentone, for Whangaroa. London, April 15, The Bank of New Zealand shares (new issue) are quoted at L 8 ss. Foreign demand sustains the wool market. Prices are unchanged, but the outlook is more hopeful. : Mr William Lidderdale, of Rathbone Bros, and Co., has been reelected Governor of the Bank of England. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have re ceived the following cable message from their London office, dated loth April;—Wool—Greasy has declined |d per lb since close of last sales. Clothing washed has declined ■ld to Id per lb. Combing washed has de dined |d to Id per lb. Scoured has declined Id to l|d per lb. Fine crossbred, market unchanged. Coarse crossbred, market is easier. Lambs’ wool, market is unchanged. Competition by both Home and foreign buyers is fairly active. Total quantity catalogued to date is 36,000 bales. Total quantity withdrawn to date is 3000.
