Thb Vehicles By-laws. —Two deputatidns, one representing the cab proprietors and the other the dray owners, waited upon the Public Works Committee of the City Council last night for the purpose of objecting to the introduction of the vehicles bylaws and new scale of fares, &o. After the deputations had retired it was decided to refer the matter to the Hackney Carriage Faros Committee, which framed the by-law. Bankruptcy. — John Withers, chimneysweep, ef Moles worth-street, was adjudicated a bankrupt , yesterday. His liabilities amount to £73 10s sd, while his assets are nil. The principal creditors are—B. R. Gardner, £lB 6s; G. Bradley, £l2 3s Bdj Ed. Anderson, £6 ; H. Plockton, £5 12a 3d ; Veitoh and Allan, £4 6s ; J. Atkinson, Pitone, £3 17s 3d. A meeting of the bankrupt’s creditors will be held on Monday next, at II a.m. The Woollen Mill Difficulty.— The Rev J. Berry will attend the next meeting of the Trades and Labour Council, to beheld on Thursday, and will probably address it. This arrangement was made yesterday in consequence of a request to that effect to Mr D. P. Fisher, Secretary of the Council, anti by|thi't gentleman referred to the President, Mr Graham. Mr Fisher has received £lO, contributed by the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, in aid of the operatives who are out.

Resident Magistrate’s Court. —Mr H. W. Robinson, R.M., presided at yesterday’s sitting of the Resident Magistrate’s Court. Elizabeth Cole admitted a charge of being an habitual drunkard, and his Worship sen* teaoed her to three months’ imprisonment. A laid named Arthur Robinson pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and resisting Constable Day in the execution of his duty. A fine of 5s was imposed for drunkenness, and for resisting the constable the accused was fined £l, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. Poultry Association. —A meeting of the Managing Committee of the Wellington Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association was held at the Association’s rooms last evening, Mr J. Pettie occupying the ohair. The schedule for the approaching show was passed, and consists of 115 classes for poultry, 23 for pigeons, and 25 for canaries and cage birds. We notice that several new classes have been added. For the benefit of those purchasing pure-bred poultry there are no fewer than seven selling classes. It is the intention of the Committee to hold another art union in connection with the exhibition, which has gained such universal popularity with the public. The Committee are very sanguine of another successful show this year. Diocesan Affairs. —At yesterday’s meeting of the Standing Committee of the Wellington Diocesan Synod attention was called to the fact that one of its members, the Rev J. Still, had left the Colony, and would not return during the present Committee’s tenure of office, but had not sent in his resignation. As there might be a difficulty in obtaining a quorum of clergy, it was suggested that the seat should be treated as vacant and another clergyman appointed to fill it. Action was postponed until-the next regular meeting, which was fixed for Tuesday next, the 22nd instant, instead of the following Thursday, the regular date, so as not to clash with the session of the General ; Sf nod.

Agricultural Association’. —The annual meeting of the Wellington Agricultural aad Pastoral Association will be held in the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, the 29ih instant, at 2.30 p.m.

Patent Slip Company - . The annual meeting of the Patent Slip Company will be held at the Company’s office, Courtenay place, on Thursday, the 24th instant, at 2.30 p.m.

Orpheus Glee Club. —The concert which the Orpheus Glee Club had advertised for to-night has been postponed until next Tuesday, in consequence of la grippe having laid several of the members of the Club hors de combat.

The Veterans’ Cricket Clue.— A match will be played oa the Basin Reserve, on Thursday, between the Veterans’ Cricket Club and the publicans for the benefit of a charity. The wickets will be pitched at 11 o’clock, and a band will be in attendance.

Phrenology.— Mr Golledge delivered the last of his lectures entitled “Proofs of Phrenology,” at the Central Hall last even* ing before a fairly large audience. The lecture was listened to with marked attention by those present, and at the conclusion of the lecture several persons among the audience were examined on their phrenological points, and the lecturer was considered to be generally correct in what be said.

Education Board Offices and .School of Design. —The City Solicitor has prepared a draft of the Bill which is to give effect to the agreement between the City Council and the Education Board to axchange a site on the Thorndou reclamation for one at Te Aro, on which the new Education Board offices and School of Design are to be erected. The Bill was approved by the Public Works Committee of the City Council last night, and it will now be submitted to the Board for its assent.

Sale of Ancient and Modern Works, — On Thursday, at 2 p.m., Messrs J. H. Bethune and Co. will offer by public aao ■ tion, at their rooms, a select library of ancient and modern works of about 300' volumes. There are a number of old and rare works seldom to be met with in thisColony, including a black letter copy of Galvin on the Psalms (1571), history of theBucaniers (1741), Boccaccio’s Decameron, Kelly’s Heptameron, and many other scarce and valuable works. A number of valuableoil paintings by such well-known English artists as Clarkson, Stansfield, G. Cooper,, and other exhibitors at the Royal Academy Exhibitions will also be offered by auction. Riddiford, a claim of £4O, as the value of certain goods which had been wrongfully removed by thedefeudant, and as damages consequent upon the removal of the goods, which included the plaintiff’s tools of trade, his Worshipgave judgment for £2l 8s 6d, and costs £312s. Mr Brown appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Gully for the defendant. In thecase of Stewart and Co. v. J. Goodfellow, claim £9l 19s Bd, in which his Worship, had reserved his deoision, judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed and coats Ss 6d. Mr Hutohen appeared for the plaintiffs and MrGrayfor the defendant.. The plaintiff was nonsuited, with costa £1 Is, in the case of Stewart and Co. v J. £L Acbeson, a claim of £l4 Isa 6d. Mr Hntohen.. represented the plaintiff, and Mr Haselden appeared for the defendant. A case in which R. Martin sought to recover from J. S. Philpot the sum of £9 and recovery of ahouse in Windsor place, in which judgment had previously been given for the plaintiff,, was reheard, and, after bearing evidence, hisWorship -declined jurisdiction, without costs. Mr Tripp appeared for plaintiff and Mr Hutohen for defendant.
