A fire on Eden-terrace this morning destroyed two houses and injured a third. It originated in a house owned by Mr Reid and occupied by Mrs Stenby, which was burned down with the contents. It then spread to a house owned and occupied6y Mr B. Sprang, which was also destroyed, but a portion of the furniture was saved. The next honae, owned by Mr Murray, and occupied by Constable Dewes, was damaged. The insurances are—Spragg’s bouse, £2OO in ths Royal ; furniture, £IOO in same office ; Reid’s house, £IOO in the New Zealand; and Steuby’s furniture, £l5O. Thera is no prospect of the Secretary of the New Zealand Bootmakers’ Union and Garrett Bros, coming to a mutual under* standing on trade matters. The firm has replaced their union hands who struck, by other men, and operations at their factory are now in full swing. That being so, they contend that there is nothing to settle.
