A privatb cable message from London, received in W ellington yesterday, conveyed a report that his Excellency Sir William Jervois, on retiring from the Governorship of New Zealand, would succeed the late Sir Anthony Musgrave as Governor of Queensland. Up to a late hour last night no instructions to this effect had been received at Government House, and the rumour is considered a very improbable one. We believe, indeed, that his Excellency’s arrangements for his approaching visit to England are so definitely made that only very special pressure on the- score of urgent public duty would induce him to accept the Queensland appointment.
