CRICKET.

SENIOR CUP. The Phoenix-Wellington heat of this contest was concluded on on No. X pitch. Basin Reserve. The Phoenix required to make 170 to win in their second innings, and, with 11 runs for no wickets from the previous week, .continued batting, Malcolm and Morice, the two not-out men, appearing at the wickets. Malcolm retired, caught after compiling 10 very quickly, and then Motley partnered Morioe, the score being -T for one wicket. An hour and a-half’s leather, hunting for the W.C.C. was the result, when, with the score at 100, Morice was clean bowled by Koch, after making 61 in capital free style; Motley followed next over, bemg bowled off his pad by Gore with 25 to his credit. Still, with 70 to make and seven wickets to fall, the bowling being broken, the chances of the Phcenix seemed very]fair; but of the succeeding batsmen—Webb (lo) and Cross (13)—were the only ones to make any stand, Durst being unfortunately run out early, and Riley disappointing everyone by getting bowled for a duck, and the innings closed for a total of 144, leaving the W.C.C. victors by 25runs. ThePhcenix batted one man short, Parker being absent. The W. 0.0. fielding was very good, Pon being spedally noticeable in this respect. Izard and A. Gore also made a smart catch each, taking Webb and Cross respectively. In bowling, A. Gore and Koch did the execution. Gore getting five wickets for 45 runs, and Koch three for 17. « The collapse of the last four or live wickets was lamentable. With 1 wicket down for 100 thW ought to have won the match easily, ana no doubt they would have done so had nottheseleotoraof theteampicked three or fear good men to do battle for their second eleven —decidedly Bell and Taylcr, and one or two others equally good, should have beau in the Senior team. However, the match committee have themselves to blame, and had they not sacrificed their Senior team for the bsuefit of their second, the result of Saturday’s match would have been very different.

JUNIOR CUP. The Phcenix-Star heat was commenced on No. 2 pitch. The Phosnix second going in first, made 120 (Bell, 42; Allen, 27), after which the Stirs were all disposed of jast on the call of time (in a little more than half an hour) for 36, no one reaching doable figures. Bell and Taylor did the bowling for the Phoenix, Bell getting five for 20, and Taylor four for 12. Remington, with four for 19, was the beat Star bowler. . The Midland-Poneko heat for the Junior Cup was commenced last Saturday 0n.N0.3 pitch. The latter going in first, soured 235 before the last wicket fell. Pownall played freely and well for 86, Merlet (40), Dawson (40), Richardson (28), and Bull (15, not out) also played well. It will thus be seen that the Pouekea have made two records in Junior Cap matches, viz., the aggregate of 235, and Pownall’s score of 86. Easton and Kilner bowled best for the Midlands, the former getting four wickets for 38, and the latter three for 48. The Midlanders have scored 9 runs without losing a wioket.
