WELLINGTON LACING CLUB,

SUMMER MEETING.—SECOND DAY. Patron : Ilia Excellency Sir Francis William Drummond Jervois, K.0.M.G., L.B. President : Sir William Fitzherbevt, Vioe-prcsidents : Measra J. S. M. Thompson and Jamca McDowell. Judge : Mr T. G. McCarthy. Stewards : Messrs J. D. Baird, J, Duthie, H. S, Fitzherbert, M.H.R., F. Franklyn, T, G. McCarthy, J. Saunders, G. 11. Scales, Starter: Mr A. Young. Timekeeper: Mr S. Kolm. Hon. Treasurer: Mr J. McDowell. Handicapper: Mr J. 0. Brett. Clerk of Scales: Mr John Wilkins. Clerk of Coarse: Mr Thomas Smith. The Wellington Racing Club, if general opinion is of any value, did not show great wisdom in postponing theseoondday’s racing of their summer meeting for a week. Nevertheless the meeting was comparatively well attended, there being about 800 people on the coarse daring the afternoon. The weather was all that could be wished for—fine and clear, with a slight breeze blowing—and the racing was ‘very good. The deference paid to punctuality, however, was not what it ought to have been. A great deal of time was lost in the first two or three races, and the Racing Club Handicap, which was to hare been started at a quarter to four, was started an hoar later. The last train, consequently, did not arrive in town till after 7 o’clock. This is a direction in which the Stewards of the Club invariably sin, and they will make their meetings ranch more popular if in future leas attention is paid to the totalisators, and more to the convenience of the people who attend the races. Otherwise there was no cause for complaint, for the racing was good, the start, ing (as Mr Young’s always is) excellent, the totalisators worked very satisfactorily, and the general management was all that could be desired. Racing was started at 1 o'clock with the Hutt Park Handicap, _ which fell to Mr T. Thompson’s gelding Little Scrub, who was capitally ridden by Hockley. Tit Bit was a warm favorite for this race, bat he ran last, having broken a blood vessel on the journey. The Hurdle Race resulted in a win for Kingask, who came very fast at the finish and beat Aroha on the post. The Local Handicap was won by “Mr Leopold’s ” Tornado, who returned his backers the handsome dividend of £l4 Bs. '’ Mr Leopold’s” other nomination, Giriri, ran a good second. The Racing Club Handicap fell'to Captain Russell's mare Tigredia. The finish in this race was a magnificent one. In the straight Reeves, who was riding the mare, had a slight lead of Charmer (who was going splendidly), and thereupon took a steady pull at Tigredia. Charmer, however, had not had nearly enough, and came again, the resalt being that Tigredia had all she coold do to win, only just managing to get her head in first. Charmer’s form astonished

• great many, and it is evident that unless he goes back he will be beard of in a big race. The other local horse, The Shah, ran

well, and was a good third. Administrator ran fourth, and Tit Bit (who had not, apparently, got over his accident) was last. An extra Hack Race was won by Taurika, and the Selling Race fell to Te Whiti, Forward running second. The Consolation Handicap was won rather easily by Mr Tanored’s filly Princess Royal Charmer was well let in in this race, bnt he displayed a frightful temper, and obstinately refused to try. After them came Tit Bit, The Shah, and Tigredia, the latter having started rather badly. Passing the straight Administrator had a slight lead of Charmer. A length away were The Shah sad Tit Bit, while Tigredia was still in the rear. Around the top turn, however, Tigredia went up very fast and took third position. In that order—Administrator and Charmer leading, with Tigredia separating them from Tit Bit and The Shah. ■.. As the road was neared theyallbegan to close up, and Administrator in the lead - gave place to Charmer, 9vor the road Tigredia improved her■. position and took. - second place, while The Shah came up and passed Administrator, These three entered the straight almost together, and a grand race home ensued.
