At the City School Committee a resolution was carried that separate school aocommodafcion be provided at once, for the purpose of bringing into practical operation the compulsory clauses of the Education Act, and a truant officer be employed. Branches of the Auckland Savings Bank were opened to-day at Onehunga and Mewmarket. Fenny Savings Banks are to be in connection with them.

Ex-Detective Parrel!, whose little difficulty at the Thames caused some public comment at the time, has arrived from Fiji, and goes on to Wellington. Owing to a redaction in the Sava police force his services have been dispensed with. At the Police Court to-day Edward Leydon pleaded guilty to falsely representing himself to be a bona fide traveller at the Waitemata Hotel on Sunday last, and was fined £5 and costs. The Auckland Burns Club celebrated St Andrew’s Day by a very successful Jacobite entertainment in St James’ Hall last night. It is stated that Mr Owen, contractor, of Sydney, has entered into a contract to finish the Kaihu Valley Railway, 16 miles from Dargaville to ICaihu Bush. The price is between £50,000 and £60,000. The line will open up valuable country. Dunedin, December 1.

At the inquest on the lad Percy Smith, killed by a fall from a cliff, a companion who was with him said that Smith had climbed a cliff from winch he had seen two birds fly. He slipped and fell. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

Captain Edie was this afternoon the recipient of an illuminated address and signet ring on successfully bringing up the Mararoa to Dunedin. Ta.ura.nga, December 1.

The Tauranga Domain Board, having decided to expend £250 in improvements, called for competitive designs, offering a premium of £ls for the beat. At a meeting to-day the design of Mr Gr. Arnold Ward was accepted. Christchurch, December 1.

Pratt’s buildings, which are damaged to the extent of £375, are insured for £llOO in the Sun Office (half being re-insured in the Norwich Onion), and for £SOO in the Equitable, The report presented at the annual meet* ing of the North Canterbury and Ashburton Charitable Aid Board to-day states that there were 370 persons receiving relief, beside 100 children in Industrial Schools.

To-night the ‘Rev. jJ. H. Habeas delivered a comprehensive address, giving a history of the progress of congregationlism in New Zealand, specially referring to the establishment of the Union before which the address was delivered.

The decree in the case of the Harbor Board v the Sinking Fund Commissioners was settled according to Judge Ward’s judgment yesterday in the Supreme Court. This morning the Harbor Board have refunded to them by the Judge’s ruling some £20,000, which goes toward the construction of works.

MrTelfer, a settler at Urenui, fellirom his horse yesterday and was picked up unconscious. He is still in a semi-conscious state. It is thought he is suffering from concussion of the brain.
