NOT BORN TO BE DROWNED.
(UNITED PBE33 ASSOCIATION.) Napier, December 19.
Mr J. T, C. Cook, sub editor of the Daily Telegraph, hid a narrow escape from drowning thia morning. While baying bia morning swim in the sea he found be was being carried out by the current. After a long unsuccessful effort to reach shore, he cried out for assistance, and was heard by Mr W. Millar, the gaoler, who ran down hill to the police station and procured a lifebuoy aud rope. Amongst others attracted to the beach was Mr Fred. R, Howard, of the Post-office, wbe seized the buoy and swam out, aud succeeded in placing it over Cook*s head just as be was sicking for tbe third time. He was then hauled ashore by tbe rope. Mr Cook had beea in tha water about three-quarters of an hour before he was rescued, He was carried home, where he remains in a weak condition.
