HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tuesday', August 13,
The usual monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held in the Provincial Hall.
Present—Messrs Mason (chairman), Alonaghan, Smith, Dick, Speedy, Alorgan, Lancaster, Chew, and Taylor. The Clerk read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were confirmed. The Chairman said in reference to the dog tax that he did not know if anything had been done in the matter since the last meeting of the Council. Air. Alonaghan said that he understood it was the wish of some members of the Council to appoint a dog tax collector. This, Councillor Alonaghan said, he would oppose. The billet was only being made for some idle man. Councillor Morgan remarked that he had heard of numerous complaints about the dogs worrying sheep. Councillor Smith thought it would be a good thing for the owners of good dogs if all dogs were registered, it would be the means of probably getting rid of many of the ours that infest the place, t Air. Aloboan moved that the necessary steps be taken for the appointment of a dog tax collector. Councillor Smith seconded the motion.
Councillor Monaghan moved as an amendment, and Councillor Dick seconded, —That a collector should only be appointed in such ridings as are thought necessary by the residents.—The motion was carried. It was resolved that the abandoned roads betweeen sections 40 and 44, Karori District, and sections 7,8, 9, and 10, Makara District, should be advertised as open for sale. The following correspondence was then dealt with :—From A. Braithwaite, complaining of the dangerous state of the ferry-boat at Waikanao. The letter was received as read.—From Mrs. W. Ockenden, asking for pecuniary assistance, as her husband was in gaol, and she was left with six young children totally unprovided for. The Council resolved to grant assistance. —From the clerk of the Makara Highway Board, requesting that the Council would pay to the Board’s funds the sum of £2OO, being the first instalment out of the £4OO voted by the County Council. It was stated that the sum had already been paid.—From the Railway Department, stating that the Commissioner of Railways in the North Island would have instructions issued to prevent the sparks from the locomotives setting the hedges on fire. It was resolved that Mr. McKirdy’s offer to pay a royalty for quarrying stone in the Nga-hauranga-road of 3d. per yard during his present contract be accepted, subject to the approval of the directions of the County Engineer. It was also resolved that the nomination of registrars of dogs stand over until the Bill now before Parliament be passed or negatived. Accounts amounting to £863 11s. 7d. were passed for payment. It was proposed by Councillor Morgan, and seconded by Councillor Speedy,— That the chairman be instructed to represent to the Government the necessity of providing funds for the prosecution of the Mungaroa and Waikanae line of roads, including main bridges.—Carried. NOTICE OF MOTION. Councillor Taylor to move at the next meeting of the Council, —That the resolution passed for the abolition of the Hutt toll-gate be rescinded.
The Council then adjourned.
