RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING.

MELBOURNE, March 6

The second day o-f the Victoria Racing Club’s autumn carnival proved most enjoyable. The weather was fine ancl cool, and there was a large attendance. The third day of the V.R.C. autumn carnival —which is generally regarded an an ‘‘off” day—turned out most enjoyable from every point of view. The weather was all that could be desired. Though the attendance was not large, it was a true sporting crowd, which expected fine racing, and was fewarded, not only by good all-round sport, but by seeing one of the best weight-for-age contests ever fought on the Flem-in-gton course. The best sprinting talent in New South Wales and Victoria took part in the All-aged Stakes, and the cheering at the close of the contest could not be exceeded even on Cup day. The fact that the handicaps were declared since the “cracks’- met last Tuesday made those races highly interesting. The other weight-for-age event also proved good. Tartan went out the strongest favourite ever known for the Loch Plate, his price being 10 to 1 on. He justified the confidence of his backers by winning easily, and is now regarded as an absolute certainty for the Champion Stakes.
