AHAURA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

-T'he Blackball school children picnic was held in the school grounds on Saturday last, and though the weather was most unpropitious, the result was a .great success, the committee were indefatigable in their efforts to make things enjoyable. The Blackball Brass Band was present and rendered some splendid selections. In the evening a dance was held in Thomas’s Theatre, and these who were fortunate to be present enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Mr Malone, of Charleston, has received the appointment as head teacher of the Aliaura school, and will take up his -duties in a few days. His Lordship, the Bishop of Nelson, paid his annual visit to Ahaura on Thursday last. In the evening he held service in St. Andrew’s ‘Church, when «ix candidates were present for confirmation. During the service a duet, “Ora Pro Nobis,” was beautifully rendered by Messrs D. C. Stark and Pi Currie. Miss White presided at the organ. Deep regret was manifest when the ■ad news reached Ahaura of the death, by drowning, of young Albert Banks. He was employed on the Jamison’s Reward Dredge, and it is thought that about 5 o’clock a.m. on Saturday he fell overboard. His body was recovered near the dredge.
