The £25,000 loan sanctioned by the Masterton ratepayers has been placed by the Mayor and Town Clerk? with a financial institution in Wellington. The loan is for a term of twenty years at 4|- per cent., with a sinking fund to be arranged-

A rather important point cropped up at the Wanganui Supreme Court last week during the hearing of a charge of false pretences. The evidence for the prosecution (says the “Chronicle”) was that money was lent on the statement by prisoner that he was a duly qualified medical practitioner. The lender was of the opinion that a “registered” and a “qualified” medical practitioner were identical,. and it was on this assumption that he lent the money. His Honor expressed the opinion that as the prisoner had not said he was a “registered” practitioner the charge of false pretence could not be sustained. He, however, reserved the point for the Court of Appeal.
