Bishop Stretch, the newly-elected bishop of the diocese of Newcastle (New South Wales) was born at # Geelong in 1855, and received his early education at Geelong Grammar School. He then went to Melbourne University, studying in Trinity where he graduated. His original intention was to study for the law, but, coming under the influence of Bishop Moorehouse, o-f Melbourne, who was appealing for young men to take orders, be decided to study for the Church. At the Lambeth Conference in 18&7 he received the degree of D.D. from Oxford University. The Hessian fly is reported to have done some damage among the wheat crops in the Pleasant Point and Fairlie districts (says the “Lyttelton Times’). Little or nothing was heard or the fly in the two previous seasons, and it had been forgotten, but this year a good deal of the wheat has fallen over through its attack in the two localities named.

Engineer-Commander Bingham, who was Admiralty representative at Westport for sjme years, is now on H.M.S. Cress.y, at Portsmouth.
