GREYMOUTH.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of members of the Grevmouth Catholic Band was held last week, and there were thirty member© present. Mr P. Deere presided. The annual report 'and balance-sheet were read and adopted. Three new members were elected. The ©lection of officer© resulted as follows: —.Sergeant P. Deere; Corporal J. Willis; secretary and treasurer, M. J. Phillips (pro tern); assistant secretary, P. Blanchfield; custodian, S. Young; committee— Messrs O'Rielly, Fogarty, Sullivan, Blanchfield, Young and C. Goodall; with the secretary, sergeant and corporal ex-officio. A vote of thanks was passed to the secretary for valuable services rendered in the past. The question of attend ng the Nelson contest was held over till a future date. The third annual social of the Amalgated Society of Railway Servants was held in the Opera House on Thursday evening, and was one of the most successful yet held in Grey mouth. The hall looked a picture, being decked with Native fern©, trees, flags, etc. The stage was very pretty and afforded accommodation for a large number of people, who did not indulge in dancing. The floor was taxed to Its utmost, there being oyer 200 couples on it. During the evening a. number of musical items were given, viz:—Songs by Messrs Guider, Spindler, Croft, Fraser and Shanks. Mr Barry gave an Irish jig. Mr F. McCarthy a splendid violin solo, and Mr W. Swift, a whistling solo. Mr Guthrie heartily thanked the audience for theii attendance, and hoped that the popularity of the railway socials would continue in the future as in the past. After full justice had been done to the good things provided, the second part of the programme was gene on with, and dancing continued till early morning.

On Tuesday evening the members of the W.O.F. Union, gave a social to the sailor© in port. There was a large att ndance of guests. The President (Mi's G ’skin) extended a welcome to Hie sailors, and expr -esed the wish of the Union that they should make themselves at home. The following friends assisted in making .the evening a pleasant one:—M : sses Smith and L. Clarke (recitations), Misses Anderson, Dixon, McTulloch, Mr Napper. and one of the sailors (songs); Rev D. McNichol and Miss McNichol, (duet). Mrs P. Nelson kindly gave some items on the gramaphono. Refreshments ' were then handed round. A vote of thanks from the guests to the ladies for providing the entertainment the singing of the Sailors' Hymn, and the pronouncing of the Benediction by the Rev McNichol, brought a most pleasant evening to a close.
