WESTLAND NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Westland Jockey Club were favoured with fine weather this year, and consequently the visitors were more numerous than, at any previous meet. The nesvj,> elected chairman of the Westland County Council, Mr T. Duff, and the Clerk of that same body intend visiting the south portion of the county, starting from Hokitika per s.s. Jane Douglas on the 17th instant, going as far as Jackson’s Bay and returning overland. The chairman wishes to be posted up in matters pertaining to that end of the County, and he thinks that a personal visit will attain the desired object.

The New Year has been ushered in by a number of sad accidents. Mrs Teasdale, of Brunner, accompanied by her sister; Mrs Thompson, with a brother and a Mrs Jack were driving from Hokitika to Ross to attend the funeral of a sister, Mrs Delaney, who di~d there, when the horses became unmanageable, ran away, and the trap was npset on the roadside. Mrs Teasdale m t with such serious injuries that she expired about an hour after the accident. Mrs Thompson and Mrs Jack are still in a very precarious state. The driver of the vehicle and Mr Gagleardie escaped without injury. Quite a gloom has he mi cast over the whole district, as the friends of the deceased are well known and highly respected. M’’s Teasdale leaves a husband and a large family to mourn their loss. The P emier, who knew the families ("Mrs Teasdale.
