LAST HOURS OF THE SIEGE.

LONDON, January 2. The capture by tho Japanese of Metre Hill and the extension of the Japanese right comoelled the Russians to fight over an extended front, and made an adequate concentration by the Russian forces with their reduced numbers impossible. The Japanese captured, towards the finish, the forts guarding the enceinte and western half of the eastern fort ridge. Fort H (which is apparently part of the Wantai-Keek wan group) was captured on Sunday, also a new fort on Panlungshan, and. after effective bombardment, the heights south of Housangantao, despite stubborn resistance. The Russians evacuated several forts during Sunday night, and blow up the majority of the ships in the harbour.
