LAYING COMPETITIONS.

THE HAWKESBTJKY COLLEGE CONTEST. October returns on the above contest were, as may have been already noted, the best: so far, though behind that of same month last year. Mr Thompson's report for October, to the “Daily Telegraph,” was as follows: ‘‘With the exception of a nice rain, extending over four days in the beginning of the month, we have had a spell of dry, warm weather, which was favourable to egg-production, and it is pleasing to be able to record an appreciable increase in the number of eggs. If we have a continuance of the present settled weather no doubt we shall be able to chronicle a fair advance for November over the corresponding month of last year. Experience lias taught u® more than ever this season that the weather conditions are an important element in governing the output of eggs. Every time we have had a period of wet weather our egg yield has suffered severely. ‘‘Tne whole of the pens are' now well grassed, and in splendid condition. We are still feeding green chaffed rape and lucerne daily. The bulk of the laying is; now being done by the White Leghorns, and some of the pens of this breed look like running up dangerously close to the leaders.

“The broodies are now giving a good deal of trouble, as they are going broody more frequently, and taking much longer to break oft'. The most troublesome in thig respect are the Partridge Wyandottes, the Jubilee Orpingtons being a good second, follower by the Buff Orpingtons. The Silver and Golden Wyandottes are about equal in a lesser degree to the three breeds named, while the White Wyandottes, Silver-pencilled 'Wyandotte®, Rhode Island Reds, White Rocks, and Imperials rank next. “Hens belonging to A. Wood, E. G. Wyckoff, E. Waldron, J. F. Scobie, C. 11. Bayley, H. Devine, and J. Howe died, and were replaced, and hen® belonging to W. 11. Tombs and A. Munro were returned, suffering from white comb and abscess respectively, and were replaced. “The monthly laying has been: April, 2383 eggs; May, 3388; .June, 4900; July, 7782; August, 10.423; September. 10.216; and October, 10,829; grand total, 49,921.”

The following are the totals of the whole ot the pens to November 30th. The competition started April Ist, 19T4. Eight months gone, four to go. Totals.
