BUNNYTHORPE
(From Our Own Correspondent.) During the past week we have experienced about the roughest weather of this winter. On Wednesday it was bitterly cold and on Thursday and Friday the wind blew a hurricane and was accompanied by heavy squalls of rain. It is generally supposed thig was the storm prophesied by Mr Clement Wragge and named by him after Sir Joseph YVard. Recently a burglary was committed here, the building operated on being the signal office at our railway platform. Mr Vowles, the officer in charge, issues railway tickets, consequently he sometimes has some considerable amounts of cash on hand, especially when so many people were travelling as last week. Evidently some one knew this, as during one night the office was broken into and about £1 12s stolen. The implements used were a pickaxe and crowbar, which had taken out of the platelayers' tool b< x. A detective lias been about here, but so far no clue has been ob tained as to the p, r~ petrators. - The School Committee has asked the Wanganui Education Board to enlarge the school. As so many new residents have come here, and as undoubtedly more will follow when Messrs Nathan and Co/s large dried milk factory is built, the enlargement of the school will be necessary, although even now it is a large school for a country town. Our bachelors are to the fore again, inasmuch as one of their most enjoyable dances is to take place shortly, and no doubt as usual will be well attended and a tip-top affair. Mrs A. J. Arnold is seriously ill and much sympathy is felt for her, Mr Arnold and family. We have had a case of scarlet fever here. Fortunately steps were taken in time and the disease has been confined to one case. Farming operations are at a. standstill, the ground being in a dreadful state and quite unploughable.
