STONEY CREEK.
CFrom Our Own Correspondent.) The winter just over has been remarkable in many ways. The first month was mild, the next cold and, calm and August has supplied us with a snow storni and an earthquake. Everything seems to indicate an early spring. The farmers are rejoicing in consequence. Great preparations are being made ior the November ehov;. I hear that Mi' Mcßride, of Linton, has bought a property near the railway station, and that Mr I. Fake,; of Palmerston North, intends to erect orick-making works on his property near the Cemetery road. Mis 3 Swenson, of Robert’s Line, was married a few days ago to Mr Christianeon, of Stonev Creek. The happy couple deserve every success and prosperity. We have escaped the usual floods this winter, for not once has the river been dangei'ous. Many farmers, who have lands bordering on the river, have planted willows to a width of three or four chains along the banks. I hear that this is an excellent plan. On Friday nignt a most enjoyable plain and fancy* dress ball was held in the hall at Stoney Creek, and although the weather was bad there. was an exceptionally good attendance. The hall was well lighted and most tastefully decorated with flags, while the floor was in excellent order, so that one felt amply repaid for braving the elements, more especially while listening to the seductive music supplied by Messrs Hitchings and Zvlattson. Mr Harry Palmer acted as M.C. About sixty couples were on the floor, the characters represented including the following:—Night, Misses Maclcay, E. Anderson and Mrs Kately: Japanese lady, Miss E. Berg; Ivy Queen, Miss Li. Hansen; Maori girl, Miss E. Petersen; Norwegian peasant gx*Ta, Miss M. Petersen; Red Cross nurse, Miss E. J. Law; Gipsy, Miss Law; Ivy Girl, Miss. Okillingworth; Romp, Miss Sullivan; School Girls, Misses M. Johansen and M. Hansen. Taken altogether the function was a delightful success and too much praise cannot be bestowed upon the committee, of whom Mr Lloyd was chairman and Mr N. Hansen secretary, for the very able and capable manner in which all the details were carried out, while the ladies who provided the much enjoyed. refreshments must not be forgotten.
