AGRICULTURE IN DENMARK

It has been arranged that a party of Scots agriculturists shall pay a short visit to Denmark, in order to examine the methods of agriculture and rural conditions generally in that country. The party includes representatives of all classes who are interested in the owning, the occupation, and the working of land, and in the preparation and distribution of farm as weU as representatives of .those who are concerned in the general education of the rural districts and in the application of technical education to agriculture. The purposes of the Commission are briefly summarised as follows: — (1) Meeting various Danish gentlemen who are authorities and experts in the different branches of agriculture there. (2) Inspecting farms and holdings of various sizes in different districts, interviewing the farmers themselves, and investigating the methods of husbandry, tlie character of the farm buildings, the

quality of the stock and crops, the system of the selection of seed, and the methods of the sale and distribution of farm produce. (3) Obtaining full information as to the Danish system of land tenure and occupation; studying the working of the agrarian societies and the application of co-operative methods to farming, also the working of the dairy, the milk supply, the bacon and poultry industries. (4) Inquiring into general and local taxation as it affects farming industry, including farm buildings, implements, manures and produce. (5) Examining the facilities for general and technical education which are available for those engaged in the various branches of farming, also the various ways in which help is given, to agriculture by the Government; and the railway and other facilities for the collection and distribution of farm produce.
