NEW SOUTH WALES DEFEATS QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, August 20. (Received August 21, 9.43 a.m.) The inter-State football match New South Wales v. Queensland, was played here yesterday, and was won by the visitors by 10 points to G. BULLER v. NELSON. NELSON, August. 20. The football match Buller v. Nelson resulted in a draw, each side scoring a penalty goal. Smith scored for Nelson, and Dennehy for Buller. The visitors’ forwards proved superior to the local men, particularly in scrum work, but tho Nelson backs showed excellent defence, and were much better than the Buller backs. MANAWATU v. HOROWHENUA. PALMERSTON, August 21. At Levin yesterday Manawatu defeated Horowlienua by six points to four, after a somewhat colourless game. A. McMinn and Scott scored for the visiting team, and Winiata potted a goal for Horowlienua. Manawatu were weakened by the absence of several of their best players. MANAWATU v. BULLER. PALMERSTON, August 17. Manawatu defeated Buller to-clay by eleven points to six, after a variable game, the complexion of which was altered during the early part of the first spell by heavy rain. The play was spoilt for the reason aforesaid, and was more or less a repetition of the match played here against Wellington. The first spell saw the .visitors beating Manawatu at every point, and tries (unconverted) were secured by Wood and (Steele in the early part of the game. The rain, however, came on, and with invincible combination, the Manawatu forwards succeeded before tho spell ended in equalising the scores. A McMinn and Scott secured tries for the home team, no goals resulting (6-6). The second half was mostly in favour of Manawatu. Bakei added another try to the score, which H. After Saturday’s trial game, which resulted in a goalless draw, the following were chosen to play against Nelson, at Nelson, next Saturday:—-Goal, Mackay; backs, Elson and Thawley; halves, Barnett, Pye-Smith, and Staples; forwards, Wills, Lowe, Hodges, 'Bennett, •and Robinson. The team leaves by the Rotoiti on Thursday evening. TTIE AUSTRALIAN GAME. CANTERBURY v. WELLINN GTO'N. A very interesting match of the Australian game took place on the Newtown Park on Saturday, when a Canterbury team (captained by Gogiel) met a Wellington team (captained by J. Hayes) picked from five clubs playing the Australian game here. The visitors were defeated by 7 goals 6 bellinds, 43 points, to 3 goals C behinds, 24 points. A large number of people watched the game, and appeared highly pleased at the display. The Canterbury team wero entertained at dinner after the match at the Trocadero, and left at 9 o’clock for home. For Wellington Hayes, Cron no, Jacobs, Greigg, Leighton (who kicked 4 goals), Creed, and Hall played well, and showed great combination, whilst for Christchurch Jacobson, Gogiel) McDonald, and Morrison tried hard to avert defeat.
