RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

THE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. FIRST DAY. (By “Advance.”) CHRISTCHURCH, August 16. The weather prevailing for Ike opening of the Grand National meeting was bright and crisp. His Excellency the Governor and the "Premier were present. The Hunters Hurdlers sent out were a good lot. The winner of the hurdles, Wonderful, is one of the Perkin Wavbeck breed, and a cut above the ordinary. The most fancied candidate, Narcissus, came to grief at the second fence. The other'North Island candidates, Hawera, and Anadeja, were beaten oft*. Three of the six starters for the Trial Hurdles hailed from the North Island. Warwick jumped badly, ran last all the way and came in lame. Moeraki ran well for a mile and a half, but found the distance too far. The Guesser was in front of The Mohican at the last fence, but the latter, a good favourite, liad no difficulty in settling his opponent in the run home. Mr Duncan Rutherford was represented by Graduated Tax (Ahua —Lady Eveline). The black jacket and white sash have been much better represented. - The Gisborne-owned Mahutonga (lato Rekua), with Fred Davies in the saddle, was made favourite for the Winter Cup Lee Enfield and Kremlin were prominent to the turn, where Blaekstone looked like scoring. In the run home Mahutonga, on the rails, came through, and only got the verdict after a good finish with Shrapnel Shell. Had the going been soft the Wellington horse might have scored. Lock Erne, Waitarere, Kremlin and Fleka made the best show of the unplaced division. Mahutonga has incurred 7|b penalty for the New Zealand Cup, which brings his weight up to 7.0. All the acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase went to the post, but only five finished. Merry Boy baulked at Cutts’. Haydn and Moccasin came to gTief at the post and rails. The first time round Agitator showed the way to the double in front the stand, where he toppled over. Aka Aka was pulled up a . mile from home and came in lame. Pipi, Slow Tom and Crespin were almost abreast six furlongs from home. The latter turned “a seven” at the top of the straight, leaving Pipi and Slow Tom in front. These two fought out a great finish, Slow Tom winning by a long neck. Saturn (late Star) was a poor fourth, and Merry Boy fifth. The success of the Ric-carton-trained horse was very popular. His only previous effort in a similar contest was when he ran second to Moccasin in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Pipi, who has had the misfortune to run second in three consecutive Grand Nationals, was also applauded. Slow Tom has been well supported in doubles, coupled with Zealous, for the Hurdles. Miss Button, who bred Slow Tom, scored in the next race with Rattlesnake, by St. Ives, sire of Slow Tom. All the horses in the Tally-ho Steeplechase, exRattlesnake, who was ridden by Paddy” Neagle, came to grief. iho Aucklander, Hautapu, made the pace m the Jumpers' Flat Race. Tupara held a slight advantage at the distance, and won with something to spare from Hippowai. The three placed horses were all from the North Island. Lissa and Talune were fourth and fifth. The latter ran over a lot of ground, ana may do better before the meeting closes. Tupara will be hard to beat in the Hurdles on Thursday. ' Only the placed horses stood up in the

in front of Phaetonitis, but the latter came again in the straight, joined Nadador at the last fence, and beat the Hawke’s Bay mare in the run home. The Dunedin-owned Brighton pulled off the Hack 31 Race from Elibank and Coxswain. Results:—

The total investments for the day, exclusive of the double totalisator, were .£15,330, as against .£15,146 on the first day last year. SECOND DAY. CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. Rain fell steadily during the night, and made the going heavy to-day, but it improved considerably as the racing progressed. The owners of Te Kohau were not satisfied with the horse’s running on Tuesday, and in the Hunt Club Cup put up S. Howie, the South Australian jockey, who scored in the Wellington Steeplechase on Kaitere. _ Mr G. L. Stead’s Balfour, who carried the Yaldhurst colours, was the first horse beaten. Rowlock and Te Kohau ran together most of the way, but tlio Wairarapa - owned horse had too much pace for his opponent. Te Kohau is leased by his present owners from their uncle, Mr C. F. Vallance. Te Kohau ran a fair race in the July Steeplechase at the Hutt. Notwithstanding Talune’s poor showing the first day he was sent out a good favourite for the Summer Handicap. After running third last to the three - quarter post, he moved up on the inside, and at the bend looked like scoring, but the effort to reach the leaders in the soft going wag evidently too much. He stopped in the straight, finishing justbehind the pLaced horses. Bayonet was in front all the way until The Mohican smothered him with a well-sustained run from the distance. Shrapnel Shell, the favourite for the August Handicap, got well away, but failed to keep his position. Kremlin and Brighton were leading to the turn, where Flower.. o’Clutha appeared on the scene, and the Dimed in-owned pair fought cut a punishing finish. Manjess, on whom G. Price had his first mount since returning from Australia, was fourth. The Grand Nations. Hurdles produced a record field, all eighteen acceptors going to the post. At the hurdle in front cf the stand, Cavalry made a bad jump, and came down on his nose. The jockey made a clever recovery, but the horse quickly dropped back. Hautapu, Slow Toni and Victor were in front for a mile, and seven furlongs from ■ home the latter was in front of the other pair. At the three-quarters post he had Zealous, Tupara and Huku as his nearest attendants. Half a mile from the post Tupara and Tahae took charge. The latter fell when going well in front at the last fence, Here a number cf others joined in and half a dozen fought out what was probably the best finish yet seen in a jumping contest in the colony. Heads separated the placed horses, and Tupara, who Avas fourth. Huku, Merry Boy and Catherine Gordon Avere also close up. The last half dozen Avere Hautapu, Slow Torn, Waiwera, Banana, Spalpeen, and Hostage. The last - named is a grey horse belonging to Hyland’s Circus, and carried black Avitli .gold horse-shoe colours. The two topaveights Avere never prominent. Lissa Avas going Avell half a mile from home although not dangerous. Medallius was bred in Canterbury in 1895. a member of the Medallion-Rosebud family to Avhich Sarto Shot, Pactolus, Maybud and Wire Gun belong. Ho raced here Avitli little success, but has paid his way since going to Gisborne, Avhere he is trained by 1. Malone. A. MeCounon. the Wellington horseman, had the mount through J. Delaney s license being suspended by the Canteroury Jockey Club. Delaney was also engaged to rule Slow Tom, the other Avmnmg “log” of the double. He backed the. pair to Avin £750 in Auckland. I here Avas a large amount of betting on the double this vear, and most cf the bookmakers got out of their liabilities when Medallius Avon. Mat Barnett laid £1432 of the double, and J. Louglilin, a Dunedin penciiler, booked the combination lor £SOO. Medallius and Hostage Avere the only horses not backed on the double machine on the course, and curiously enough, they flushed first and last. HippoAvai would have paid £207 13s 6d and Scottish Minstrel £B3O 13s. The holder of the last-named ticket would have taken all the money in the machine. The investments Avi 1 i now be returned, less tho usual percentage. A large number of tickets Avhich did not get the first “leg” of the double Avould be destroyed.

The tAvo most fancied candidates for the Beaufort Steeplechase Avhen the acceptances appeared (Pipi and Crespin) Aver© AvitkdraAvn. The Dunedin-OAvned Phaetonitis, Avitli Percy Johnston in Cue saddle, carried most money in the Beaufort Steeplechase. Saturn came to grief at the second fence of the stand double. The favourite was attended by Eclair and Comfort to Cutts’s, where Haydn headed Comfort. Phaetonitis Avas nearly doAvn at the brush fence at the top of the straight, but had enough left to stall off a strong run by Haydn at the finish.

Shrapnel Shell was saddled up again in the Islington Handicap, but lavo races in one day Avere too much for him, and lie Avas one of the last to finish. Brighton’s stable mate, Juniper, Avas a hot favourite. He got going sloAvly, and Avas never prominent. Cannie Chiel Avas in one of his generous moods. He hopped off in front, and avus never headed. He had to be ridden out at the finish io beat a strong challenge by Secret Society and Waitarere. Cannie Chiel’s success Avas anticipated by followers of Cutts’s stable. Anadega appeared to have a Avinning chance in the Hunters’ Hurdles, but she found the distance too far and Avas beaten in the straight for third place bv an other North islander, IlaAvera, who hail? from tho district after Avhich he is named. Te Kohau Avas brought cut again in this race, but Avas never prominent and A\ms one of the last to pass the post. C. Jenkins’s horsemanship got Eubank home in the Wcolston Plate. Al double, he was well backed straight on* though Medallius was deserted in liie in the Hurdles, and paid only £l4 3?. The Brighton-Medallius double on tfia machine had tAvo tickets on it,-each of which paid £219 12s.

Howie), 1; 264 Messrs Elwortny Bros.’ RoAvlock, aged, 12.7 (A. McKenzie), 2; Messis ELvorthy Bros.’ Craigmor© (coupled AvitJi Rowlock), 6yrs, 11.9, 3. Also started—l 44 Rattlesnake 12.2, 58 Balfour 11.2. 27 Gammon 10.10, 19 Barlock 10.12. Passing tho stand Balfour and Rowlock Avere running six lengths clear of Rattlesnake and Te Kohau. Barlock fell at the first fence of the double. At the seven furlong post RoAvlock and Te Kohau dreAv out, and after crossing the last fence Te Kohau came aAvay, av nning by six lengths from RoAvlock, Craigmore a similar distance aAvay. Time, smin 29 3-ssec. Dividend, £5 3s. Sunnier Handicap, of 100 soys; one mile and a half.—l7o Mr G. Murray-Aynsley’s The Mohican, by Mauser —Adventuress, 4yrs, 11.2 (F. Davies), 1; 70 Mr T. Bayonet and The Mohican were first to show out. Rounding the home turn Bayonet Avas still clear of the field, but once in the straight Talune, Bombastos, and Royal Crown moved up. The Mohican dreAv out from the others at the distance, and catching Bayonet tAventy yards from the post, Avon by tAvo lengths, Shellfire five lengths away third. Time. 2min 54sec. THIRD DAY.

The C.J.O. meeting, which was brought to a conclusion on Saturday, was, from a racing point of view, one «<aL-th&_ best steeplechase gatherings yet held in the colony. The weather conditions, however, were scarcely enjoyable. A strong nor’-wester prevailed, making matters wry unpleasant for those who attended. The double event totalisator was run .on the Sydenham Hurdle Handicap and Beathoote Handicap. Out of £783 invested there were eight tickets on the winning combination, Hippowai and Loch Erne, the dividend on which was £BB 4s. The totalisator turnover for the day amounted to £10,.337, making £39,494 for the meeting. This amount is £2283 less

than last year. , Of the ten starters for the Hunters Hurdles, Plantagenet, Hawea and Early Van came to grief at the first fence, in front of the stand. Wonderful also came down about six furlongs from home, when going well. The Invercargill-own-ed Andy Regan practically led from end to end. Anadeja did not shape so well as on the previous day, and was only a poor third. Andy Regan, who ran a good race behind Wonderful on the first day, is by the Apremont —Maria Theresa horse Lorraine, a full-brother to Assace (the dam of Glenaladale). The Ladies’ Bracelet was the softest of things for Mrs P. A. Herman’s nomination Slow Tom, who was ridden by Mr Gerald Stead. He was in front all the way, but was not extended, and paid the gopd price of £2' Is. The Guesser, who had an engagement later in the day, was the only withdrawal from the Sydenham Hurdles. It was a great betting race, nine of the twelve runners being evenly backed. Tupara and Huku had the largest following at flag-fall. The-former came to grief at the third fence passing Cutts’s. Percy Johnston escaped with a shaking. Hippowai and Zealous, who finished fourth, made all the running. The Aucklander had to be ridden out to win by a bare half-length from Cavalry. Huku, who put in a great finish on the rails under punishment, was the same distance sway. Cavalry and Hautapu were brought out again in the Pinal Hurdles. The field included Moeraki and Cremona, two of AScot’s progeny, bred in the Wairarapa. The latter came down at the second fence. Victor 11. led to the six-furlong post, where The Guesser and Moeraki were in charge. The Guesser drew out in the straight, and won by four lengths from Moeraki, Cavalry being fourth. Mr McLean got back half the purchase money for the Enchanter gelding at the'first time of asking. _ - The Guesser alid Moeraki finished in

the same order in the Trial Hurdles. The form of this pair in the Final Hurdles makes The Mohican out to be pretty good. Had he been left in the National Hurdles, in which he bad the minimum weight, he would have been hard to beat. The Mohican was last season raced by

his breeder, Mr A, G. Misken, of Kaikbura. He now runs in the ownership of his trainer, Mr G. Murray-Aynsley. He is by the Maxim horse Mauser, fron Adventuress (Perkin. Warbeclc H.— Peggy), who produced a fast horse in Telemeter. The Mohican finished like a racehorse in tlie Summer Handicap on the second day, and is the most likely hurdle candidate seen out at the meeting. The ten runners for the Lincoln Steeplechase negotiated the brush fence safely, but the post and rails at the top turn brought down ■ Victory and Creep in. It was feared the latter had broken a leg. Mr Weal (Crespin’s trainer) on Saturday night informed me that the horse had injured his shoulder, and might have to be destroyed. The Waikato v trainer had a disastrous trip with Aka Aka, Tahae, and Crespin, all three being injured. The brush fenoe in front of the stand the first of the double accounted for Phaetonitis. P. Johnston, who rod© Phaetonitis in his victories on the first and second days, was unable to take the mount owing to a fall earlier in the day. Barring Haydn, Phaetonitis was the best steeplechaser seen out at the meeting. He beat nothing of any class in the Enfield Steeplechase, and did not start in the Grand National, in which Haycjtn beat Pipi at a difference _of two stone. In the Beaufort Steeplechase Phaetonitis beat Haydn at a difference of 251 b. In the Lincoln Steeplechafe, Haydn was asked to concede Phaetonitis 111 b, Pipi 211 b. and Eclair 371 b. The latter was meeting Phaetonitis and Haydn on 201 b and 61b better terms respectively than in the Beaufort Steeplechase, in which lie finished fourth. Phaetonitis was bred at Longbeach by Mr J. O. N. Grigg, by the Trenton Sapphire horse, Phaeton, from Fickle, by Hornby—-Caprice. At the sod wall, about six furlongs from - home, Agitator (a half-brother to Liberator) and Evening came to grief in the straight. Haydn, niado a g&ni6 ofrorfc t;to overhaul Eclair, but the latter was kept going, and won by about five lengths, Pipi a poor third. The Dun-edin-owned pair, Blackstcno and Juniper, carried the bulk of the investments in the Heathcoto Handicap. Tlio latter made the best show, finishing just behind Waitarere, who was fourth. Lee-Enfield was in front until within a hundred yards from the post, where

longed, and the three dashed across the line separated by heads. Petrovna, the favourite for the Selwyn Handicap, got well away, (but had a bad run on the rails. Muscovite took charge in the straight, and won by nearly three lengths from Flower o’ Clutha. Muscovite, who has been cn the retired list for some time, finished better than in the Woolston Plate, although he walked in lame. Mr R. Solomon (owner of Muscovite) received 70 sovs, half the proceeds of the sale of Elibank, when the Stepniak gelding ran second in the Woolston Plate. E‘libank was purchased by Mr Hugh Cassidy, the well-known ChristchurchWest Coast coach proprietor. Eurus (a gelding by Euroclydon) was the punters’ choice for the Hunters’ Plate Handicap, hut the best he could do was to finish fourth. The Wairarapabred Jolly Roger (by Saracen—Merry Maiden) won comfortably at the finish from Hawera.

Saturday was a disastrous day for backers. Only one first and one second favourite returned dividends in the eight events. Following are details of the racing

At six furlongs Huku got into fifth place, and racing for the straight, Hippowai drew out, Cavalry, Huku, and Catherine Gordon moving up.
