ACCRUED THIRDS
£21,933 NOT CLAIMED. WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THAT? Thero were submitted to Thursday’s meeting of tiie Land Board a list of accrued thirds lying to the credit of the various local bodies in tho Wellington Land District. This list shows that there remains unclaimed in the hands of the Government on behalf of these bodies the largo sum of £21,933 0s lOd. It is suggested as a reason for this state of things that the locai bodies are deliberately refraining from claiming tho thirds in order that they may by-and-bye have “ nest-eggs" to operate upon, and thereby be able to ease off in the matter of rating. It seems rather improbable that local bodies situated in districts far apart have arrived at a long-headed understanding of this kind, but the fact remains that in connection with several districts where the unfortunate settlers are clamouring for roads and public facilities, thousands of pounds are lying idle and unused.
The following is a list of the local bodies referred to, and the amounts of unclaimed thirds at their disposal:— Akitio County, £5148 Gs Id; Cast lepoint Road Board. £23 10s lid; Eketahuna Countv £269 5s lOd; Featherston Road Board, £263 10s Id; Fitzlierbert Read Board, £235 lGs 8d; Hutt County, £SO 2s Id; Iviwitea County, £4077 8s 9d; Alangawliero Road Board, £2390 9s Gd; Manawatu Road Board, £1 4s lid; Alasterton County, £1293 17s lid ; AfaurieeviUe County, • £54 3s 7d; Pahiatua County, £1427 17s 4d; Patea County, £5 12s 7d; Petone Borough, £9 15s sd; Pohangina County, £232 19s 9d; Rangitikei County, £4358 Is lOd; Taratahi-CJarterton.
