OVERCROWDED TROOPSHIPS
The deatlis occurred in the Somes Island Hospital last Wednesday of 5523 Private Henry O. Ryan, of Hakaru, Auckland, and 5457 Private Albert E. Brown, of Happy Valley, Wellington. Both were suffering from pneumonia after measles. Ryan was a farmer. Brown was a labourer. The latter’s father lives at Puriri, Thames. Albert Tonks, C Squadron, Eighth Regiment, who landed from the Britannic, died in the District Hospital on Thursday from pneumonia, supervening on scarlet fever. Tonks was a farm labourer. He enlisted from Waimamaku, Hokianga. The thirteenth death among the soldiers who returned from South Africa by the Britannic occurred at the temporary hospital on Somes Island on Sunday, when 5806 Private J. N. Lunn, of Collingwood, Nelson, siuccumbed. Deceased was a collier" His aunt, Mrs Brooker, was present when he died.
Following is Monday’s report on the patients in the hospital at Somes Island :—J. Burke (Pahiatua), very ill; W. Nicholson has now a chance of recovery, his temperature having fallen; M. Bourke (Petone) is doing very well at present; Atkins (Auckland), is much better; Lucas (Featherston), a little better; Newschamp (Martinborough), was had last night, but is better this morning; Pevreal (Waikato), Murray (Hokitika), Fitzgerald (Stratford), Johnston, Page (Hokianga) and Ward (Blenheim) are all convalescent.
Monday’s report on the Orient’s invalids was as follows:—Turner (Whangarei), much better: Kitchen (Mungonui), going on well; Rowling (Riwaka, Nelson), throat much better j Lieutenant Johnston and Private Compton (Hastings), convalescent.
The invalids have been shifted into new quarters to allow of the old ones being thoroughly aired and disiufected. The Permanent Artillerymen are all doing well.
