HYBRIDISING IN NEW ZEALAND "The Horticultural Society informs that the new seedlings were found to be of exceptional merit, and, in the opinion of capable judges, the majority of them were much in advance of the newest varieties sent out by Messife Cannell, of Swanley, Kent (with which they were. compared). This firm enjoys a world-wide reputation as producers of this beautiful plant. The seedlings were all exceptionally well-grown, and presented a gorgeous appearance. The work of the sub-commit-tee was to name and award certificates of merit where these were considered deserving on the points of distinct novelty, habit, constitution and culture. The pride of place was undoubtedly taken by a beautiful cross between Nithvale Gem and Mrs H. Clarke, two of Mr Clarke's productions of former years, and favourably known, to horticulturists. This new variety, which was named Lord Roberts, is an advance on the parent plants both in foliage and vigour. It has an immense truss and large individual blooms. The next specimen was an excellent cross, showing its relationship to Madame Thebaud and Leonard in its beautiful colouring, and was named Baden-Powel). This, like the preceding plant, is remarkable for its dwarf habit. The trusses are very large and beautifully marked, some of the single florets being 3$ in. across. To another striking variety with immense trusses—lower petals pure white, upper a rich carmine—was given the name of Lady Roberts; while to an attractive specimen, also of dwarf habit, was given the name of Sir Alfred Milner, This variety is a wonderfully free bloomer —trusses good, lower petals pink, uppei bright red .with maroon basis. A very pretty variety of good habit, medium trusa, and a great substance, was named General Wauch ope. To these five varieties the committee awarded first-class certificates, the opinion being expressed that the Lord Roberts specimen was probably the best new variety seen in the colony, and pretty well perfect m every point. A pretty var2ety> °f good habit and truss, with medium substance, was named Commonwealth A' variety showing flower of large size and good substance, but of a less compact nature, was named Lord Kitchener; and indistinct variety after the parent plants, Edwin Perkins and Dt Masters, was named Joseph Chamberlain. A further specimen of good robust habit and brilliant blossom waa named Lady Sarah Wilson. To these latter varieties second-class certificates .were awarded, mainly , because they were not such distinctly new novelties as those awarded firsts/'—Otago Daily Times. NIMMO & BLAIR, DUNEDIN.
