Dunedin Winter Show.

AN INTERESTING EXHIBITION. SrCCESS OF NORTH ISLAND FACTORIES. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s sixth annual winter show was opened to-day. and is generally admitted to be a pronounced success. There was a large attendance when the Premier opened the show. Mr Seddon’s opening speech lasted three-quarters of an hour. Although only two counties are competing for the counties' prize, they make a fine display. A new departure, which has excited much interest, was the fat stock section, which proved a great success. The cattle and sheep were not numerous, and several of the former were rejected because of their wildness making them unsafe to be shown. There were over seventy sheep, including several from Canterbury. The managers of the various estates of the Land Company competed keenly against each other. The Aston Estate, xtakaia, Canterbury, with five pens, took first and second prizes for down crossbred hoggets; second and third for long-wool crossbred hoggets; and second for Border Leicester hoggets. The Edendale Estate was first and fourth in long-wool crossbreds, besides other awards. The Hakateramea Station, the Levels Estate, Totara Estate and Moraki Estate, all the properties of the New Zeciland and Australian Land Company, also scored in the prize list. Mr D. Andrews (Mosgiel) won in the Border Leicester hoggets section, and Mr Robert Brookland (Timaru) in Shropshire hoggets, while Mr A. S. Orbell (Waikouaiti) was unopposed in the English Leicester hoggets.

Mr W. Patrick (Balmoral Farm) won in both classes of cattle, and the Edendale Estate in pigs. The show of roots, seeds, etc., was good. The only weakness of the show was in grain and hams and bacon. In factory-made cheese, the Island Factory, Southland, easily won the champion prize for most points, winning first for best ten cwt. full cream-coloured cheese, and the two best factory-made cheese, white or coloured. For Mr John McNairn’s challenge cup Waikouaiti Factory was first, the Island second. For the best ten cwt-., white or coloured, from small factories, Seaward Downs was first ; for cheese made between Ist and 15th April, the Wyndham was first and second. Messrs Hill, Watson and Co. took a prize for Stilton cheese, and Mr W. W T right for the best farmer-made. In factory butter, the Wyndham Factory was first for the challenge cup, for the best three boxes. For the best two boxes suitable for export. _ open to the North Island only, the Waverley (Wanganui) Co-operative Factory was first; Wellington Fresh Food and Ice Company, second.
