CENSUS RETURNS.

A large staff of men has been at work for some timo past in the compilation of tho census taken in April last, and the, rough results made up from enumerators’ summaries and comparison with previous censuses have now been completed. The total European population of tho Colony is in excess of the csthnato made by the Registrar in March last (701,400), being 703,008, to which will have to bo added tho Chatham Islands returns, net yet to hand. This gives an increase of 7(3, Je0 on the figures for ISM. The increase in tho North Island is 00,1G7, or 2R02 per cent., and of the Middle Island 17,110, or 7) 05 per cent.
