SUBURBS LICENSING COMMITTEE.
At the annual meeting of tho Wellington Suburbs Licensing Committee last week, tlio following applications for licenses wero granted Diary Guildford, Marine Retreat, I’etone ; J. Cody, Central Hotel, Petono ; B. P. Walker, Railway Hotel, Jolmsonvillo ; L. Filers, Pori nil Hotel. Applications for renewals were granted as follows -.—Clara Jane Hathaway, Club Hotel, Kaiwarra; T. Oxenliam, Victoria Hotel, Petono; J. IT. Jackson, Empire Hotel, Petono ; It. Cunningham. White Horso Hotel, Ngahauranga; M. A. Clapliam, Ngahauranga Hotel; G W. Prictor. Esplanade Hotel, Onslow ;F. J. Preston, Kilbirnio Hotel; T. Ilould, Johnsonville Hotel. Tho transfer of tho license ol tlio Rainbow Hotel, Kaiwarra, was granted. Complaint was made that each of the Unit hotels (Railway Hotel, A. A. Gray ; Central Hotel, G. Nicholas; and Family Hotel, I’. Casey) had supplied ono George Scrimshaw wifli drink, he not being a lodger or traveller, on Sunday, April 2Gth. Scrimshaw and Constable Cruieksliank gave evidence. Mr Casey said, in answer to the Committee, , that lie knew nothing about the matter; Mr Nicholas said ho bad refused the man drink, and Mr Gray said lie refused the drink. 'l’ho Committee, after consideration, said they wore not at all satisfied that Scrimshaw did not get his drink at the hotels mentioned. They were not, however, justified in taking action upon such evidence, but warned tho licensees mentioned. Tho Committee adjourned till Saturday.
At tho licensing meeting, Reofton, all tho publicans’ and accommodation applications, numbering 70, wore granted,also throe wholesale licenses. Two applications for licenses for lintels at Poll angina, have been refused by tho Palmerston Licensing Committee. Tlio Grey Licensing Bench granted applications for bottle licenses, holding that tlio Act of 1895 was contradictory, and only precluded the issue of new licenses. The Bench further relied upon subsection G of clause 12, which gavo licensees tho right to two successive renewals. It is understood that tho Prohibitionists contemplate an appeal to tlio Supremo Court. By 5 to 4, tlioTuapcka Licensing Committeo regretfully decided that there was no option but to issue bottle licenses. At tlio Timaru licensing mooting tho Rev W. Gillies strove to got tho licenses restricted to 10 o’clock, but had only one supporter. All licenses have been renewed.
Tlio application of Dir Watson for a license for the Island Bay Hotel was granted at an adjourned meeting of the Suburbs Licensing Committeo held on Saturday morning.
