THE PROPOSED MARKET.

At last week's meeting of the City Council some discussion took place as to the method in which the information leaked out that the Markets Committee had recommended the adoption of the plan marked " Advance Wellington," and that the name of the competitor who sent in this plan had been disclosed. The Town Clerk stated that none ot the Corporation officers had given the informaCouncillor Devine moved as an amendment on the committee's report that tho design marked "Cardboard" should be adopted. He said that the plan marked ' Cardboard adhered more clearly to the specifications and he presumed what was wanted was not merely a nice picture, but a building that would be practically useful as a fish market, or as a general market. Councillor Harris seconded tho amendment. In doing so he was supporting the export evidence. The amendment was negatived by eight to four, and the committee's repoit was adopted. . . The envelopes accompanying the competitive designs Avere then opened, ( and the competitors were found to be :—' Advance Wellington," J. Charlesworth ; Cardboard," It. Boy Macgregor ;" Economy, Clarkson and Hamilton, Christchurch ; " L'Essayo," E. W. Coleridge ; Semper Eadem," H. C. Lough.
